Hawaii struggles with being able to feed itself. Our island chain imports more than 80 percent of the food consumed by local residents, in part because the cost of producing our own food is so high people can’t afford to buy it.

Derek Kurisu is a big believer in changing that equation. He is the executive vice president of KTA Superstores on the Big Island which sells primarily locally grown products, including its own Mountain Apple brand.

In this edition of Hawaii Snapshot, Kurisu talks about his efforts to encourage farmers to produce their products at an affordable price and educate them about how to beat the competition from the mainland.
