In our coverage, it was a week of movement.

We wrote some surprising stories dealing with those left behind. Nathan Eagle followed up his attention-grabbing article about a Hawaii program to send out-of-state homeless people back “home” via commercial flights or cruises, with the revelation that the plan will be nixed.

Alia Wong, our education reporter, recounted how dozens of charter school students on the Big Island were left to find their own (sometimes dangerous) way after their public school bus access was cut just days before the start of the school year.

There was plenty of early movement on the campaign trail, where state Rep. Mark Takai and Honolulu Councilman Ikaika Anderson declared for the increasingly crowded 1st Congressional District’s Democratic primary.

Our columnist Chad Blair found shifts in the Hawaii delegation in Washington, D.C., where the state’s various representatives seem to be moving away from their traditional unity.

The movements appeared to be very gentle on the Big Island, where our environmental reporter Sophie Cocke and videographer Brad Watanabe, spent time on a sumptuous papaya farm, but the undercurrents were another matter.

Sophie produced a nuanced report about how the genetically engineered rainbow papayas that she saw might somehow be unique in the broader — and notably polemic — GMO debate. Brad put together a luscious video from the farm Hawaii Snapshot — A Legendary Scientist and His Papaya Dreams.

Lastly, we highlighted a particularly strange set of movements that emerged from the murder trial of Christopher Deedy, the special agent who shot a young Kailua man in a Waikiki Mcdonald’s.
