You’d have thought this would have been a slow week for news.
In Hawaii, most people (not us) got two extra days off. Tuesday was Prince Kuhio Day and Friday was Good Friday. It was also spring break for local schools. The good news was that traffic was light on Honolulu’s major roads.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie also apparently thought it would be a slow news week. On Tuesday, he called the media and other notables to Washington Place for what was billed as a major announcement. Invitations printed in gold, no less. Quite a pupu spread. And much logo-infested swag.
The hold-your-breath moment? “The Lion King” musical production is returning to Blaisdell! Next year.
Fortunately for true news junkies a lot of actual news happened this past week, much of it important public policy debate here in Hawaii and in Washington, D.C. The nation’s attention was turned to the U.S. Supreme Court and the arguments over same-sex marriage.
Locally, the political battle over genetically modified organisms and food safety continued at the state Capitol along with work on the state budget. Meanwhile, Oahu residents were being sickened by an outbreak of food poisoning.
