Maui County closed down a portion of beach in Makena Wednesday after a diver spotted what looked like an 8-foot-long Galapagos shark around 12:50 p.m. reports:
A diver reported that an 8-foot-long Galapagos shark attacked the string of fish that he had trailing behind him.聽 The diver released the string and headed for shore.
Ocean Safety officers on a jet ski later found the string with some partially eaten fish still attached to it.
It’s the latest in a string of shark attacks in the last month off Maui: A paddleboarder knocked off his board by a shark on Oct. 18, two weeks later a California woman punched a shark in the nose and escaped with stitches.
And just this weekend, another Maui diver was bitten in the ankle by a 12- to 15-foot tiger shark. He told his story to the Maui News:
