Finally. The end is in sight.
Election Day is Tuesday and we spent this week wrapping up our coverage of the candidates and their campaigns. Our latest Civil Beat Poll came out this week, and shows most of the races to be pretty much set. Mazie Hirono over Linda Lingle. Colleen Hanabusa over Charles Djou. Tulsi Gabbard over Kawika Crowley.
But the white-knuckle race to watch on Tuesday is the Honolulu mayor’s match-up featuring former Gov. Ben Cayetano and former Honolulu managing director Kirk Caldwell. That one is truly going down to the wire with our poll showing Cayetano slightly ahead but peaking while Caldwell continues to surge. The question will be whether the wave will continue to rise and carry him past Cayetano next week.
As has been the case throughout the election, much of the political coverage this past week centered around the mayor’s race including Pacific Resource Partnership, which has continued to pour big bucks into an effort to stop Cayetano and keep the Honolulu rail project on track.
On Tuesday, we’ll have our entire staff out at polling places, sign-waving events, the state’s election headquarters (that’s at the Senate chamber this year) and various campaign celebrations and returns-watching parties. Watch for our live blog with updates from throughout the state beginning Tuesday afternoon. We’re expecting the first returns about 7 p.m. Tuesday and we’ll have the latest results as soon as they come in throughout the night on civilbeat.com.
We’ll also have Michael Levine in Washington, D.C. reporting on how the race for president is shaping up as polls begin closing and results start coming in hours earlier on the East Coast. Don’t forget, they switch off Daylight Saving Time on the mainland on Sunday, so the East will only be five hours ahead and the West Coast two hours.
And we’re taking down our paywall on Sunday, through Wednesday, so people will have full access to Civil Beat coverage for this all-important election.
