Finally.
It’s primary Election Day and all signs point to an exciting evening for all of us political junkies. Here at Civil Beat we have been deep into the elections for months, and this past week was no exception.
We published the last in a string of Civil Beat polls that showed where the Big 3 races — U.S. Senate, the 2nd Congressional District and Honolulu Mayor — were standing with just days to go before the primary vote. Our numbers had Tulsi Gabbard over Mufi Hannemann in CD2, Ben Cayetano potentially winning the mayor’s race without having to go to a runoff, and the Democratic match-up between Mazie Hirono and Ed Case too close to call.
But the ultimate voter survey is taking place today and we’ll be here through much of the night reporting on all the races. Check our special edition Live Blog beginning Saturday afternoon for voters’ final thoughts, candidates’ final sign-waving and other election news.
Once the polls close at 6 p.m. we’ll be moving to the campaign headquarters and other locations where candidates will be watching the returns with their supporters. First results are expected about 6:30 p.m. and you can easily follow along on our home page as they’re updated throughout the evening.
Civil Beat will be free to all readers through the weekend, too, so any interested citizen can follow this important election.
So make the time and go vote today. If you need a reminder of what a cool place Hawaii is and how any citizen can make a difference, check out this video of a much younger Gov. Neil Abercrombie rocking out for an Easter Seal fundraising benefit.
