The Hawaii Sierra Club is taking Mufi Hannemann to task over claims he鈥檚 made about his environmental record.
The group has gone so far as to launch a website to dispel what it refers to as myths: .
Hannemann sent out聽an Monday to supporters touting his accomplishments. But the Sierra Club says it contained several falacies.
For instance:
Some of the myths perpetuated by the Hannemann campaign included the allegation Mufi helped introduce curbside recycling. The truth is, Mufi Hannemann was the biggest opponent to curbside recycling. When first elected, Hannemann cancelled the City鈥檚 fledgling curbside recycling program. He then proceeded to spend the next several years opposing efforts to create a curbside program at the City Council, the State Legislature, and in the City Charter. He repeatedly argued it would cost too much and that burning trash was the preferable option.
The Sierra Club has endorsed Tulsi Gabbard, who is running against Hannemann, for the congressional district 2 race.
Robert Harris, the executive director of the environmental organization, rebuffed potential criticism that the website was launched to help Gabbard:
“Although some will try to depict the Sierra Club鈥檚 website () as an attempt to benefit Tulsi Gabbard in a tight election, the website was deliberately intended to be objective and focused on Mufi鈥檚 record while in office,鈥 said Harris. 鈥淭he Sierra Club developed this website by linking each statement to a source. We specifically tried to avoid name-calling.鈥
