It must be an election year.

Polls and debates were a major focus of our news coverage this week. Civil Beat released results of two new polls — one on the U.S. Senate Democratic primary matchup between U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono and former congressman Ed Case. That one shows the two candidates neck and neck.

The second poll looked at the Honolulu mayor’s race. The last time we looked former Gov. Ben Cayetano was way ahead with 53 percent of registered voters supporting him. He’s still way ahead but his numbers have dropped. He’s now at 44 percent compared to 21 percent for Mayor Peter Carlisle and 23 percent for former acting mayor Kirk Caldwell.

Case and Hirono squared off in three debates, the first on Maui at a forum sponsored by the AARP. Back in Honolulu, they went at it again in a Hawaii Public Radio debate and in a televised interview moderated by Dan Boylan on PBS.

There was plenty more news besides politics going on in our state — more developments in the murder trial of a federal agent here for APEC, pesticide permitting is stalled and state officials are pushing utility executives to look at natural gas as a way to lower electric bills.
