This week we brought you stories from different corners of the state, from Hana’s school on Maui to smart meters on Kauai.

On Oahu, the City Council made some interesting decisions, the mayor reached out to the homeless and the city ethics commission wants to train 10,000 employees in ethical behavior.

At the state Capitol, agencies are picking up the pieces in the aftermath of the legislative session just passed and moving ahead with some policy directions put in place by lawmakers.

But politics continues to cast a long shadow over the news as campaigns continue to rake in significant cash and candidates ramp up the political debate — and rhetoric.

To that end, we started two new series this week to better track money and politics. Our Cashing In series analyzes the state’s campaign finance database to see who’s giving money and how it’s being spent.

And to track how campaigns and outside groups are using TV ads to influence Hawaii elections, we’ve started The Public File, a weekly check of who’s buying political ads and for how much.
