Leaders of the Hawaii Legislature didn’t add much to their political war chests during the second half of 2011, according to the latest round of due by midnight Tuesday.
Speaker of the House Calvin Say between July 1 and Dec. 31, bringing his total contributions for the entire election cycle to $16,515.
Say during the same time frame and reported having $32,693 cash on hand as of Dec. 31.
Meanwhile, Senate President Shan Tsutsui took in fewer dollars, but reported having more than three times as much cash on hand than Say.
Tsutsui in contributions during the final six months of 2011, bringing his total donations for the election to $76,050. He spent $5,731 during the reporting period, and had $104,077 cash on hand as of Dec. 31.
Both legislators’ larger donations came from local and mainland business interests.
To put the fundraising totals in perspective, in the 2010 elections, the average winning House campaign raised $40,051 while the average winning Senate campaign raised $86,707, according to the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission. All 76 legislative seats are up for reelection this year due to redistricting.
Under , contributors can give $4,000 to a state Senate candidate and $2,000 to a state House candidate.
