APEC Protesters Ramping Up for Saturday
Protesters are expected to ramp up their efforts on Saturday, when all dignitaries will have arrived in Honolulu for the final two days of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.
Here’s what’s slated for Saturday by three organizations that have been protesting APEC this week.
- Hawaii is planning a 4 p.m. march from Old Stadium Park in Moiliili into Waikiki. Coordinator Carolyn Hadfield says the group wants to get as close to the Hale Koa hotel as possible, where President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will be hosting a dinner for conference dignitaries. Due to road closures, the march will likely end up in the vicinity of the at the intersection of Ena Road and Ala Moana Boulevard.
From the website: “It is shaping up to be a big one and there may be several routes, but they’ll all aim to be as close as possible to the Hale Koa to hold signs and chant. Noisemakers welcome … World Leaders and CEOs will be having their final dinner at the Hale Koa that evening.”

Occupy Honolulu doesn’t have specific plans for protests Saturday, but some demonstrators may join the World Can’t Wait march into Waikiki. Others may continue to rally at the group’s camp at Thomas Square Park on South Beretania Street.

Some Moana Nui participants also plan to march from Old Stadium Park to Waikiki at 4 p.m.

members plan to rally outside the Hawaii Convention Center “all day” Saturday, according to practitioner Ben Maloney. He said the group hopes to secure the same areas as Friday — along Atkinson Drive and on Kapiolani Boulevard.
