WASHINGTON — Itching to use your kamaaina discount on one of Oahu’s more extraordinary hotels? You may want to wait until after APEC, the global economic conference that’s being hosted in Honolulu next week.
At some hotels — the Halekulani, for example — you can’t get a room at any price. In other cases, nightly rates are far more expensive during the global economic conference than they are the following week.
Civil Beat took a look at 14 major hotels, mostly in and around Waikiki: ; ; ; ; ; The ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; , previously known as the Waikiki Edition.
We tried to book a room for two adults with a check-in date of Monday, Nov. 7 and a check-out date of Sunday, Nov. 13. Then we compared the best room rates we found — before applying any special promotions like the Hawaii resident discount — for that period to an identical seven-day six-night period the following week.
At the Hawaii Prince Hotel near the marina in Waikiki, there were no rooms available for the week during APEC, nor were there any available for the week after APEC. The following week, Nov. 21 through Nov. 27, showed a best rate of $764 per night.
The Sheraton Waikiki was also booked solid for two weeks beginning with APEC. Rates for a six-night stay beginning on Nov. 21 started at $265 per night.
Here’s what we found:
