9:15 a.m. Council Concerned About Rail Operation Costs

Forget the $5 billion price tag to build the Honolulu rail project. Members of the Honolulu City Council are now more worried about how the city is going to pay to operate and maintain the system.

Council Chair Ernie Martin, Vice Chair Ikaika Anderson, Budget Chair Ann Kobayashi and Legal Affairs Chair Romy Cachola — all in Washington D.C. for a rail conference — told Civil Beat Washington Bureau Chief Adrienne LaFrance that they’re very concerned about the impact on taxpayers.

“We have three big city projects that you have to look into: Rail is over $5 billion, then you have the sewer, which is $5 billion, and then the increasing water (fees), which is about $300 or $400 million a year,” Cachola said. “You are the taxpayers and you hear this, how are you feeling right now?”

That’s the takeaway from a Civil Beat report from Washington D.C. today. Adrienne LaFrance obtained a letter from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sent to Honolulu officials last week and a return letter sent days later that says the city is still working on it.
