8:41 a.m. An Evening With Carlisle

Speaking of Honolulu mayors and fundraising, Peter Carlisle has his hand out.

The current mayor is hosting a fundraiser Wednesday night at Bishop Museum. He’s asking for $25 per person, and has the following note to supporters on :

Aloha, it has been almost a year since I was sworn in as the 13th Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu. Please permit me to take this opportunity to share what this administration has been doing since then and to ask for your support.

One of the issues in the Carlisle for Mayor Campaign 2010 was to remove politics from City Hall. The directors of over 20 City agencies who compose the top City leadership, were chosen based on their qualifications and merits. None of them are forced to support my political campaign. Rather, they are required to do an outstanding job and follow the policies of the administration.

Another major issue was to get the City鈥檚 financial house in order. This is a long and difficult path. The key is to drive down debt service, the interest taxpayers pay on borrowed money which is roughly $1 out of every $5. How to do this is to curb current borrowing for new projects. The Capital Improvement Program budget submitted to the City Council was the leanest in 7 years despite inflation and an ever increasing population. We are proud that Fitch Ratings and Moody鈥檚 Investor Service affirmed Honolulu鈥檚 bond rating at AA+ and Aa1 respectively.

Finally this administration promotes transparency. Earlier this year, the City launched can-do.honolulu.gov, our new transparency website. For the first time ever, the City鈥檚 proposed budget was posted online in line-item data form for the public to analyze. The website also will be updated regularly with fiscal progress reports so citizens can see online how taxpayer monies are being spent in regular increments over time.

You may not agree with all my decisions. I can only promise you that I will do my best to run the City in a responsible and independent manner and make decisions not based on personal political consideration, but what is best for the people of Honolulu.

I humbly ask for your vote in the upcoming election and for any monetary contribution you can spare. I also invite you to join me at my next fundraiser, on Wednesday October 19, 2011 at Bishop Museum.

You’ll notice the dinner is not on his official public schedule below. But the results of the fundraiser will be public. In the last cycle, Carlisle raked in the cash despite having no announced opponent for the 2012 race.

8:26 a.m. Mufi’s Fundraising Muscle

Former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann is off to a strong fundraising start in his quest to earn the Democratic nomination for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district. His primary opponent is current Honolulu City Council member Tulsi Gabbard.

Waipahu Rail Soil Tests Begin

From a Friday afternoon:

The Honolulu Rail Transit Project began soil sampling work this week for two rail stations in Waipahu, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) announced today.

The soil tests will assist rail project staff in designing the two Waipahu area rail stations: the Waipahu Transit Center station at the intersection of Farrington Highway and Mokuola Street; and the West Loch station at the intersection of Farrington Highway and Leoku Street.

The soil work will be done on weekdays between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. No traffic impacts are expected with the soil test work, which will take place on private property. Lane closures are not required for this portion of the work.

Young People Love Honolulu

From a Friday afternoon:

The City and County of Honolulu has achieved national recognition as one of America鈥檚 Promise Alliance 鈥100 Best Communities for Young People鈥 presented by ING for its initiatives to help young people. The competition recognizes communities across the country that focus on reducing high school dropout rates and creating brighter futures for young people.

The City鈥檚 2011 recognition marks the fourth win for Honolulu in this competition. Other winning years were 2006, 2008, and 2010. This year, Honolulu competed with more than 300 communities from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico for this honor.
