9:23 a.m. Congestion Deception
Civil Beat‘s editorial board weighs in this morning on what is perhaps rail opponents’ central complaint. They say that the city misled the public into believing that rail will solve Honolulu’s traffic problems. Is that true?
The short answer: No, it’s not.
For the long answer, including numerous citations to statements made by former Mayor Mufi Hannemann, current Mayor Peter Carlisle and numerous other rail proponents, read the lead story today: Did City Mislead Public About Rail’s Impact on Congestion?
9:15 a.m. ‘Outrage’ on Mayor’s Homeless Comments
Earlier this week, Civil Beat shared Mayor Peter Carlisle‘s comparison of Honolulu’s homelessness problem to a rat infestation. Two contributors in the days since have expressed their disappointment in that comparison.
- On Wednesday, our formerly-homeless blogger Joe Bright shared his thoughts on the comments and homelessness in a piece titled Re-Homed & Off the Edge: Rats Really Are Everywhere.
- Today, Curtis Kropar, a formerly-homeless reader, shares his anger and asks Where is the Outrage?
If you haven’t already, go read Carlisle’s thoughts and the two thoughtful responses. What do you think about how our mayor looks at homelessness?
Successful Sewage Trucking
Remember that controversial plan to truck raw, untreated sewage from Sand Island to Honouliuli? Well, the one-month trial ends today, and the city is pleased with the results so far.
Keoki Kerr from our partners at KITV caught up with Environmental Services chief Tim Steinberger yesterday and filed a story about the trucking operation.
“It’s shown that it has not had any impacts that we can tell on the instantaneous data. There’s some data it takes several days before you actually get the results back. But so far, the results look good,” Steinberger said.

Where’s Carlisle?
Mayor Peter Carlisle has no local public events today or for the rest of this week. He’ll be in Washington D.C. with Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation Board Chair Carrie Okinaga and Interim Executive Director Toru Hamayasu. Read for all things Washington, including updates on the Honolulu officials’ visits with the congressional delegation and the Federal Transit Administration.
