Mental health services. Medicaid. Military. Tourism.
Employees in those areas represent the 10 highest-paid people in Hawaii state government.
They include six employees in the Department of Health, two in the Department of Defense, and one each from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and Department of Human Services, according to a Civil Beat analysis of more than 14,000 salaries provided by the state in response to an open records request.
The list has changed slightly from last year’s ranking, where eight of the state’s top 11 employees (two people were tied for tenth-highest paid) fell within the state Department of Health’s mental health programs — a result of Hawaii’s time under court oversight for lack of mental health services.
Last year’s highest-paid state employee makes more money this year, but has dropped one spot to the second-highest paid. Meanwhile, last year’s second-highest paid employee has moved up to the No. 1 spot, earning nearly 21 percent more than last year.
The only new position to the Top 10 list is the Department of Defense’s Deputy Adjutant General, which ranked at No. 7 this year.
