It was just a few weeks ago that Civil Beat spread its reach to the nation’s capital, with an eye toward how decisions in Washington, D.C., affect Hawaii.
Today, we expand our focus in a different direction, toward the east, and how events in Asia will affect the future of Hawaii and the United States.
We’re delighted to welcome aboard former New York Times reporter Richard Halloran, who will write a weekly column, “The Rising East,” which will examine “events and trends in Asia and in U.S. relations with Asia that are of consequence to Americans, especially to the people of Hawaii.”
Halloran, a longtime Honolulu resident, is a veteran journalist who was a correspondent in Asia at different times for Business Week, The Washington Post and The New York Times. He is the author of “Japan: Images and Realities” and five other books. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in government and international relations, a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in East Asian Studies, and had a Ford Foundation Fellowship at Columbia鈥檚 East Asia Institute.
