There’s always something interesting going on at Honolulu Hale.
Civil Beat is reporting from the inside.
11:29 a.m. Senator to HART: ‘We’re Counting On You’
Sen. Daniel Inouye just wrapped up his remarks to the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, and stressed his appreciation for members’ important contributions to the project.
“You are the stewards. We’re counting on you,” he told them.
Inouye has been championing rail for decades, and said “one of the saddest days of my political life” was when an earlier incarnation failed at the Honolulu City Council by one vote.
“This time we’re going to go to the finish,” he said.
He acknowledged that times are tough in Washington right now, and said there are no guarantees even though he considers Federal Transit Administration chief Peter Rogoff a friend of the project. But Inouye said that as chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, he’s got some tricks up his sleeve.
“Even in these difficult times, if I can’t deliver, then I should be cursed,” he said.
The board had stood at attention when he entered, thanked him profusely for his support, and then embraced him as he left. Effectively all of the assembled media left with him.
8:43 a.m. Inouye at HART Today
The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation is taking its show on the road this morning, heading to Kapolei for a 10 a.m. meeting.
is pretty dry, but does include one interesting item: a message from Sen. Daniel Inouye. HART confirmed last night that Inouye would be there in person.
More coming soon.
Mayor Catches Some Waves
Civil Beat caught up with Mayor Peter Carlisle yesterday after his meeting with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, and the mayor was in his usual chipper mood. That interview is part of our story this morning:
Mayor to HUD: Tell Us What To Do And We’ll Do It
We should have made a point of hanging out with him later, when he went surfing as part of the Duke’s OceanFest.
KHON has the video of Carlisle in his yellow rashguard, catching waves and even wiping out:
Vacation Rental Plan In Limbo
Even after two public hearings, the Honolulu Planning Commission is still unable to reach a final consensus on whether to step up enforcement on illegal vacation rentals by scouring online ads to see if each available rental has a permit.
The Commission voted 4-3 in favor of the plan yesterday, but needs five votes to officially put its stamp of approval on the matter before it heads to the Honolulu City Council. Read Nanea Kalani‘s coverage here:
