2:14 p.m. Rail Opponents Ask For Investigation

Opponents of the Honolulu rail system on Tuesday sent a letter to Mayor Peter Carlisle, members of the Honolulu City Council and the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation asking for them to look into the city’s cozy relationship with Parsons Brinckerhoff and Infraconsult.

In particular, they asked the city to determine which entity was responsible for the $29 million “mistake” that had the original rail route closer to the airport before it needed to be moved. The authors of the letter, Cliff Slater, Randy Roth, Ben Cayetano and Walter Heen, are the same folks who are suing the city for failing to comply with environmental review laws.

Where’s Carlisle?

At 9 a.m., Mayor Peter Carlisle will deliver remarks at a Honolulu Fire Department Promotion Ceremony at Hale Kinai Ahi. At 5 p.m., the mayor will deliver remarks at a Duke Kahanamoku Statue Lei Draping Ceremony at Kuhio Beach.

That latter ceremony will also involve a “Goodwill Beach City” agreement with an Australian community. According to a press release put out yesterday:

Warringah Council, Australia, is a unique oceanfront community with direct historical and cultural links to Duke Kahanamoku and his hometown, Honolulu. In 1915, Kahanamoku visited Warringah Council鈥檚 Freshwater Beach and introduced surfing to Australia. A solid wood surfboard carved by Kahanamoku during his visit is proudly displayed at the Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club鈥檚 clubhouse on Freshwater Beach.

Honolulu is celebrating and strengthening its historic ties with Warringah Council by forming a Goodwill Beach City relationship to foster mutual respect in each city鈥檚 history, culture and community, including the encouragement of tourism and preservation of natural beach resources. A commemorative signing ceremony will be held in front of the Duke Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki on Wednesday, August 24 in conjunction with the 10th Annual Duke鈥檚 OceanFest event.
