We’re happy to announce that Sophie Cocke has joined the Civil Beat team as a reporter-host.

Sophie will be responsible for the Land beat, where she’ll write about the forces that are shaping Hawaii and the kind of place it will become.

Some of you may know Sophie from her work at , where she covered energy, health care, education and technology. She has also reported for the .

Raised in the mountains of southwest Virginia, she is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she majored in history. She has a master’s degree in journalism from the .

Some things most folks don’t know about Sophie: She’s a former dancer, enjoys yoga, surfing and spearfishing. Though she says she always gets stuck toting the bag of bloody fish because she’s not a good shot. Her mother was the May Day Queen at Pearl Harbor Elementary School in 1958. (The family is very proud of this.) And her uncle, Bobby Cocke, is a renowned waterman on the north shore of Kauai, where he lives with her aunt and cousin.
