His story started on Dec. 13, 2010.
That’s when Joe Bright introduced himself to readers of Civil Beat, with his blog, Un-homed but not unhinged.
Fifty-eight articles and 212 days later, Joe finally has a home.
Over the weekend, Joe landed himself an apartment.
“Needless to say, it was strange to sleep there in an empty apartment, but then again I cooked breakfast for the first time in about a year,” he wrote in his 59th article, published on the site today. “I may only have one bowl, two spoons, two forks and a knife, but now I have a drawer to put them in. Holy moly!!
Holy Moly for sure.
We’re delighted for Joe. And grateful to him for sharing his journey. It wasn’t easy, and maybe not all homeless can follow his path, but by writing about his experiences Joe has opened a small window into what it is like to be “unhomed,” as he likes to put it.
In the future, we hope to open many more windows, to continue Joe’s work of building understanding.
I hope you’ll share your thoughts with Joe now that his life has taken this new, and welcome, turn. Here’s where to go if you’d like to do so.
