UPDATED 6/3/11 12:13 p.m.
Honolulu police arrested a suspect who allegedly opened fire on five people shortly before 1 a.m. Friday morning, leaving one victim dead and two hospitalized.
The shootings, which police say appear random, began near the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Kapahulu Avenue, and played out across the westbound lanes of the H-1 freeway, ending with an arrest on the Moanalua Freeway.
A 54-year-old woman later died after being shot multiple times, including in the head.
HPD Maj. Richard Robinson told reporters the suspect is a 28-year-old male with both a Honolulu and North Shore address. Toby Stangel was in police custody and has five prior misdemeanor charges, including drunken driving and driving without a license.
Robinson said the suspect will be charged with multiple counts of first-degree attempted murder and firearms charges. He said police recovered a semi-automatic handgun.
HPD had shut down all westbound lanes of the H-1 freeway and Moanalua freeway as it conducted an investigation, snarling early morning traffic and preventing the Zipper Lane from being deployed. As of 6:30 a.m., the freeway had been reopened.
HPD said the first shooting took place at 12:43 a.m. Robinson said the suspect approached a vehicle on foot near the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Kapahulu Avenue and allegedly shot at a 21-year-old male, who was not injured.
鈥淭here was no altercation that led up to it,鈥 Robinson said.
The suspect then approached another vehicle and allegedly shot a 54-year-old woman multiple times, including in the head. A 16-year-old passenger was not injured, police said.
Police said the suspect, driving a BMW, got onto the H-1 freeway and around 12:53 a.m. allegedly pulled up to and shot at a 24-year-old woman. A 38-year-old male who had slowed down in another vehicle was shot, police said.
At 12:58 a.m., the suspect approached police officers at a traffic stop on the Moanalua Freeway near the Aiea off-ramp and allegedly opened fire on two solo bike officers. The officers were not injured, and pursued the suspect.
Robinson said it 鈥渁ppears the suspect stopped on his own鈥 and was 鈥渁rrested without incident鈥 on the freeway near the Kaamilo Street overpass.
