The owners of the Waikiki Edition — one of Honolulu’s flashiest new boutique hotels — have sued Marriott International and famed hotelier Ian Schrager, claiming both reneged on their promise to make the new hotel brand successful.
The suit, filed in New York Supreme Court names Schrager because he is Marriott’s partner on the Edition hotel brand. Yet, Schrager, considered the father of boutique hotels, has been largely absent, the owners of the Waikiki Edition contend. The suit seeks unspecified financial damages, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The Edition opened with great fanfare in October 2010. Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto chose the hotel to open his first Hawaii restaurant.
M Waikiki, the Waikiki Edition hotel owner, bought the hotel, next door to the Ilikai Hotel, in 2006 for $112 million. They spent more than $200 million to renovate, yet the owners say the hotel has since lost $6 million and reported just 30 percent occupancy in the fourth quarter of 2010.
