Civil Beat wants to team up with our readers to do something great for our community. Are you in?
Last week we celebrated the site’s first birthday. It was a time to thank readers who have been so generous with their support. We wanted to say mahalo with some gifts:
- Free one month subscriptions with registration! (You could win an iPad 2!)
- 50% off our memberships, save up to $120!
- We also put together a short video that helps explain what we’re trying to accomplish with Civil Beat.
But celebrating online and celebrating in person are two very different things. We wanted to get together with our readers and do something fun – and something meaningful. At Civil Beat, we all do our own individual community service – but imagine the good we could do if we combined our efforts along with all of yours! So – let’s pick a project together.
Below are some great opportunities where Civil Beat can team up with passionate Hawaii citizens and do some good. Read about the different organizations and cast your vote for which one you’d like to work with first. We hope to do more of these community partnerships down the road.
Please vote and share this page so we can get a good idea of what our readers are most interested in! Thanks!
: Honolulu Habitat for Humanity is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Honolulu Habitat was founded in 1988 and has completed 64 homes since then. They have recently completed their 65th home in Waialua, their first on the North Shore.
: In 2001, U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye began a new initiative called Hawaii 3R’s (Repair, Remodel and Restore Hawaii’s public schools). Working with state agencies, trade unions, businesses, military, community leaders, parents, teachers, and students, the goal is to match state, federal, and private funds with volunteerism — “sweat equity” — both skilled and unskilled, to reduce the backlog.

Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 80 chapters worldwide. The Oahu Chapter’s mission is to improve water quality, ensure the public’s right to beach access, reduce plastic marine debris, and work for responsible, ocean-friendly development on the island of Oahu.
