The Hawaii Legislature is giving real legs to all the talk about audits of the Department of Education.
In the , lawmakers added three new positions to the department’s allocation — all of them designed to “aid in internal audits and investigation.” The department has two people in its internal audit division currently.
“Your Committee on Conference hopes that the department will work with the newly appointed Board of Education to identify troublesome issues and provide viable solutions,” reads the on the budget.
New Board of Education Chairman Don Horner has spoken repeatedly of a new push for school system audits, and one of his first actions as chairman was to establish an audit committee. He has declined to share yet how he plans to use the dozens of internal and independent audits that have already been performed for various programs and sections of the Department of Education in recent years.
