HPD Officer Accused in Overtime Scandal: Not Guilty
One of the six Honolulu police officers facing charges in an overtime scandal has been found not guilty — one day after his jury trial started.
Leighton Kato was on trial for allegedly falsifying a police report so that his supervisor could get bogus overtime pay. He faced two charges of theft and tampering with a government record.
Kato himself took the stand in court Thursday. Character witnesses also took the stand, calling Kato an honest man.
Two sergeants and three other officers are scheduled to go to trial this month for the case. A seventh officer pleaded guilty to record tampering.
