Police shot and killed one of two suspects in a carjacking in East Oahu Thursday afternoon. What ended with hours of traffic gridlock began with a car theft in the university area, which led police on a chase into Aina Haina.
KHON reports that when the stolen car crashed into a barrier, two male suspects led police on a foot chase. One of the suspects, a man in his twenties, fired a rifle multiple times at police. Police fired back, and hit the suspected gunman multiple times. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and later died.
Meantime, the second suspect had run away and carjacked a Lexus SUV, driven erratically and crashed into at least one other car before police were able to detain him.
Honolulu Police shut down Kalanianaole Highway in both directions, leaving commuters in gridlock that lasted hours.
KHON reports both suspects have criminal records, and that the suspect who died was released from prison two months ago for a stabbing that occurred at the Punahou carnival in 2001.
Read the from KHON, which connected the suspects to an attempted robbey at a Waikele jewelry store last weekend.
