In December 2010 and January 2011, heavy rains in Leeward Oahu led to spills at the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill.
The Hawaii Department of Health inspected the landfill multiple times. While it won’t share the reports from those inspections because it’s considering action against the landfill owner (the City and County of Honolulu) and operator (Waste Management Hawaii), it can share its photos.
Civil Beat requested all inspection photos taken by the department’s Clean Water Branch since 2008. Here are the best 17 photos, in this reporter’s estimation, from the most recent inspections, starting in December 2010 and going through January 2011:
