New Fissure Spews Lava on Hawaii’s Kilauea
Lava is shooting 65 feet into the air from a new fissure that spans the length of five football fields at the Big Island鈥檚 Kilauea Volcano.
Scientists knew something was happening when an alarm sounded, signifying one of the volcano鈥檚 craters was collapsing.
In an evening flight over a remote area about 10 miles east of the Jagger Museum on Saturday, a geologist spotted lava spewing from the new vent. This development is considered part of the larger volcanic eruption that began in 1983, and has been continuing ever since. Because of the eruption, officials are closing roads and eastern trails around the park until further notice.
