Coming soon to a Whole Foods Market near you: a bar.

The upscale grocer already serves fresh gelato and hot food. Now, the retail chain will tend bar, selling craft beer and local wine in more than a dozen test stores — including in Hawaii — before a wider roll-out.

Hawaii will get its bar by 2012, says co-CEO Walter Robb.

In the past 18 months, locally-focused bars have opened in five Whole Foods Markets in California, and two each in Arizona, Illinois and Texas. Its newest bar in Austin has about 20 seats and offers beer and wine by the glass for $4 to $10, or growler jugs starting at $6.99.

Meantime, other chains including Starbucks are slowly introducing beer and wine to their wares.
