Early estimates show that the Big Island suffered nearly $14.2 million in major structural damage from the March 11 tsunami, county officials told the Hawaii Herald-Tribune on Tuesday.
“The numbers are basically structural and utility damage only, so they don’t reflect loss of inventory, contents of buildings, that sort of thing,” county Civil Defense Administrator Quince Mento said.
Commercial property damage totaled $11.1 million, residential properties roughly $2.5 million. County property sustained about $562,500 in damages, Mento said.
Two hotels — the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel and the Kona Village Resort — were hit hardest, estimating damages of $3.58 million and $3.53 million, respectively. Kona Village Resort’s sister-property, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, sustained about $257,000 in damage.
