More California firefighters are arriving in Hilo to help battle a lava-sparked wildfire at Kilauea volcano that is now threatening a nearby rainforest with endangered species living in it.
The firefighters are coming from Sequoia National Forest to assist Hawaii Volcanoes National Park firefighters, according to park service Fire Education and Information Manager Gary Wuchner.
The fire began on March 13 after the new Kamoamoa fissure opened up in Kilauea’s eastern region. The fire has grown to 3 square miles. Firefighters cannot estimate when they will contain the fire.
