Cops Crash Magic Island Spring Break Party
Honolulu police shut down a massive spring break at Magic Island over the weekend after reports of partiers passing out.
Police say between 500 and 1,000 people showed up to the event, advertised on Facebook and other networking websites as . It was an all-day affair, scheduled to be held from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
“After several calls to EMS were made for passed out victims, police, along with ocean safety, determined the event was unsafe and potentially unmanageable,” said Caroline Sluyter, a spokeswoman with the Honolulu Police Department’s media liaison office. “So we shut it down.”
Sluyter says about 25 officers showed up on the scene but no arrests were made. Police met “minimal resistance” from partygoers.
She did not know the exact number of people who had passed out.
Floatopia became a tradition in Santa Barbara, but was canceled there last year because it had grown too large and dangerous. Instead, the city had a Streetopia.
The Honolulu version was described by organizers as “the biggest party you have ever seen at Ala Moana Beach.” The invite said, “Bring your floats and your drinks and start you spring break off the right way!”
