Calvin Say has led the House as its Speaker for more than a decade. Earlier this year, he fought tooth and nail to hang on to the post. But now he says he’s fed up with a budget crisis that won’t go away.
“In the short term, it’s been so frustrating the past four years. It’s deja vu every biennium,” a disheartened Say told the House Finance Committee. “This biennium it’s another $1 billion … Truthfully, all we’re doing is a Band-Aid approach … I’m tired of addressing the type of proposals that the members of this House went through this past week during recess.”
His outburst was a surprise. After all — he’s been in charge of the House for 13 years. He’s responsible for the way things are. And given that he pulls rank over first-term Senate President Shan Tsutsui, he’s clearly in a position to fix the problem.
