This past weekend, Waikiki played host to the annual Honolulu Festival – an event that celebrates the people, food and culture of the Pacific Rim region.

Festival goers enjoyed a variety of cultural dances, songs and regional cuisines by some of Hawaii’s most famous chefs and restaurants. One particular treat was an appearance from Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto himself. Other popular restaurants like Roy’s, 3660 on the Rise, Ruth Chris and Shokudo were also there.

Although it had only been 48 hours since a 9.0 magnitude earthquake had hit Japan – a feeling of positivity and hope was a theme throughout the night. Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle said Hawaii was a friend of Japan, and that, “friends help friends in time of need.” Many songs, dances and demonstrations conveyed the message that Japan and Hawaii were “ohana.”
