Gov-Appointed Ed Board All But A Done Deal
Only two more steps before becomes law and Gov. Neil Abercrombie has the power to select his Hawaii State Board of Education appointees.
In a move that came as a surprise to, well, no one, the state House of Representatives passed the bill Tuesday afternoon and sent it to the Senate for final approval. Then it would be on to Abercrombie’s desk, for his signature. Earlier this month, House Education Chairman Roy Takumi abandoned his proposal for a selection advisory council that would vet candidates, in favor of this bill, which would give the governor sole authority to select his own board members. Under Senate Bill 8, the governor’s nominees would still be subject to Senate approval.
The biggest uncertainty about the bill is whether the Senate will pass it before or after the Legislature’s mandatory five-day recess, which begins Thursday. Abercrombie has already pledged his support for the bill.
