Times are tough, but that hasn’t stopped University of Hawaii President M.R.C. Greenwood from taking $5,000 per month in unnecessary living expenses. She continues to live in a Waikiki-area condo on the university’s dime while the president’s mansion — newly renovated to the tune of $440,000 — sits unoccupied.

The 4,500 square-foot mansion, named College Hill, costs the university about $115,000 per year to maintain. But the Board of Regents agreed to continue dispensing an additional $60,000 annual living stipend to the president as part of her three-year extended contract. That more than replaces the 10 percent cut she volunteered to take on her $475,000 salary during systemwide budget cuts.

That $60,000 could cover at least one student’s entire college education.
