It’ll be one year in jail for a former city of Honolulu street sweeping supervisor who collected more than $19,000 for overtime he never performed. A judge on Tuesday sentenced Manuel R.K. Castro, 51, for bribery, theft and tampering with government documents. Castro took kickbacks from his underlings for signing off on false overtime claims, too. Deputy City Prosecutor Chris Van Marter said Castro did it to boost his retirement. The judge ordered Castro to pay a $25,000 fine, perform 250 hours of community service and pay back the overtime he didn鈥檛 earn.

Civil Beat has been investigating this same division for its excessive overtime claims. We reported that some employees of Honolulu’s Road Maintenance Division earned more in overtime than regular pay, and claimed overtime twice for different jobs done at overlapping times. Honolulu Prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro’s office has said there’s a pending investigation of the division.
