Other Hawaii government agencies have tried to withhold the salaries of their employees.

But of all the state’s agencies and of all the City and County of Honolulu’s agencies, only the Police Department remains secret. The others, such as the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the city of Honolulu itself, have all ultimately acknowledged that they must comply with the law.

Civil Beat has shared the salaries of government workers because it believes that transparency in government, especially how government spends tax dollars, is critical if citizens are to be informed and provide input to their leaders on how government should operate.

That is why we have exposed overtime abuse in the city Road Division and in the state’s Public Safety Department. It is why we continue to ask questions about government spending and to seek public records to share with our readers.
