The First Amendment has reared its head in a dispute on the Big Island over a lecturer who was suspended because of the language he used in his philosophy class. Daniel Petersen first agreed to a settlement that included a suspension from Hawaii Community College over the 2009 incident. A parent complained that his language was profane and that students were told they could leave if they found it offensive. But after he was told that he wouldn’t be needed to teach next semester, he’s decided to sue the university system for infringing on his free speech rights. The students might be the biggest victims. Petersen is not turning in their grades to administrators.
