The Sunday Honolulu Star-Advertiser had what might be the sleaziest ad of this campaign season.
The attack on Neil Abercrombie was paid for by the Hawaii Republican Party, Jonah Kaauwai, chairman. He’s the one who told us in the primary that Duke Aiona, the former congressman’s opponent in the governor’s race, is the only “righteous” candidate Hawaii has seen in decades. (Sorry, Linda Lingle.)
The ad, with the headline “This Democrat Didn’t Forget Who the Real Neil Is,” is a reprint of something written by Bob Rosehill in the Oct. 6 issue of the Hawaii Tribune Herald.
Rosehill has every right to say and believe the charges he makes against Abercrombie in the ad. But the Republican Party waiting until two days before the election to lend its name to calling Abercrombie names? What’s with that?
Here are just a few examples:
- “Loud-mouthed, hippie”
- “Called soldiers of my generation murderers and baby killers”
- “Turned his back on Hawaii”
- “Changed his way of communicating, dressing and grooming to fool us into forgetting his real persona”
- Doesn’t have “enough energy to walk a short, downhill parade route on the Fourth of July”
- “Supports gambling and other vices”
- “A total fake”
If the Republican Party really believes these charges are worthy of financial support, why has it waited so long to share the devastating news about its nemesis with us?
And why bury it in a small ad on an inside page?
