Mufi’s Tweet to the Finish Line
Governor candidate Mufi Hannemann has really been cranking out the tweets in the week leading up to Saturday’s primary election.
For example, Hannemann, who claims 609,816 followers, averaged one tweet per hour in a 24-hour period from mid-afternoon Tuesday to mid-afternoon Wednesday.
They’re mostly pretty soft — e.g., “Did you spot my signwavers on Piilani Highway down in KÄ«hei this afternoon? Mahalo to the team for their efforts!” — and promotional — e.g., “Aloha Kakahiaka! I’ll be spending the day on a trolley tour of Oahu, starting first on the Leeward Coast, and working my way into town.”
Then there are the pure platform pitches: “As Governor, I’ll work to improve our public schools to ensure that all of our keiki can excel. .”
Hannemann — or whoever is actually doing the tweeting — seems concerned about voter turnout. To wit: “Tomorrow is the LAST day to cast an early ballot! Find the walk-in location closest to you & avoid election day lines: http://j.mp/voteEarly.”
The candidate also never misses a chance to recognize a constituency — “Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Find out more about this event at ” — or offer an interesting factoid: “Did you know that Maui is home to the oldest post-secondary school west of the Rockies? Lahainaluna High School was founded in 1831.”
When Mufi spotted Jason Scott Lee at the “Hawaii Five-O” premiere, he tweeted.
When Kathryn Matayoshi was named superintendant of schools, he tweeted.
When it was National Grandparents Day, he tweeted (“I have fond memories of my grandfather, Pinemua, and my grandmother, Vaofu’a, who both lived in Samoa”).
When Sen. Daniel Akaka turned 86, he tweeted.
And that was just in the last week!
He had just two posts in that same 24-hour period Hannemann was in Twitterville:

Abercrombie, who has 6,531 followers, has averaged barely a tweet a day in over the last week.
But he’s concerned about turnout, too, as seen in a Sept. 13 tweet: “We all need to vote: The most important primary election in decades is only days away. DO NOT miss the chance for … .”
