The GLBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaii unanimously voted to denounce governor candidate Mufi Hannemann鈥檚 opposition to Hawaii civil unions, says Caucus Chair Jo-Ann Adams. “The Caucus reminds all Democratic candidates that the Party’s Platform supports equality before the law, including the right to equal relationship recognition, such as that set forth in House Bill 444 relating to Civil Unions,” says the GLBT Caucus, which has endorsed Hannemann’s primary opponent, Neil Abercrombie, for governor.

The Hawaii Publishers Association is sponsoring a debate between Hannemann and Abercrombie, to be held Aug. 11 at Dole Cannery’s Iwilei Ballroom. Steve Petranik, editor of Hawaii Business Magazine, will moderate.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka is sponsoring new legislation he says will strengthen the G.I. Bill. , the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act of 2010, is intended to enhance new education benefits for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

First Congressional candidate Colleen Hanabusa is trying to with national Democrats in hopes of defeating Republican incumbent聽Charles Djou. She’s reported to be reminding them that they screwed up supporting Ed Case in the May 22 special election instead of her.

Honolulu City Councilman Ikaika Anderson has scheduled community meetings later this month and next in his Windward district to get input on banning the use of consumer fireworks on Oahu. Anderson says he has reservations about over enforcement issues.
