Former state Sen. Gary Hooser, who resigned just last week to run in the Democratic lieutenant governor primary, officially files his election papers today. The Kauai resident is the only prominent seeking to become the next LG.

John White, a former aide to U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, will file his papers Tuesday for the Honolulu City Council District II seat comprising Oahu’s North Shore and surrounding areas. Current occupant Donovan Dela Cruz is term-limited and running for mayor.

Term-limited Gov. Linda Lingle will meet privately Tuesday with hotel owners and operators at the State Capitol’s executive chambers. The topic: discussion of “ongoing proactive efforts to bolster the visitor industry and improve Hawaii’s long-term economy.”

The state House Committee on Human Services, chaired by Reps. John Mizuno and Tom Brower, will hold a hearing Tuesday at on gang-related violence involving Hawaii youth. Lawmakers want to focus on “best practices” for dealing with the problem.

The office of U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye on Sunday announced that the Senate Committee on Appropriations has approved nearly $750 million in for Hawaii. The projects include infrastructure work at the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, a Welding School Shop building at Pearl Harbor, and a new federal fire station at West Loch on Oahu. The funding now awaits full Senate approval.
