  • U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye was with President Barack Obama and top Senate Democrats today to plan the party’s legislative priorities before the August recess. Wall Street reform, extension of unemployment benefits, and a campaign finance reform bill are among the pressing issues 鈥� will Inouye be able to convince his colleagues to find time for the Akaka bill?

  • Democrats and Republicans now say control of the U.S. House with the midterm elections. Expect that to be a big issue in the likely Nov. 2 matchup between U.S. Rep. Charles Djou and Democratic challenger Colleen Hanabusa, the state Senate president.

  • Former Gov. John D. Waihee III says Hawaii’s public school system is not meeting the needs of society, noting that only about 13 percent of students plan to attend college after graduation. The Democrat’s comments came in to the Contractors of Kauai in Lihue.

  • State Rep. Lynne Finnegan will hold a blessing for her headquarters Wednesday evening at 1034 Queen St. across from Nordstrom Rack. Finnegan is currently the House minority leader.
