Presenting a brief list of local political and governmental items of interest:

• In a counter-offensive to the opposition of the Hawaii Business Roundtable to House Bill 444 on civil unions, Human Rights Campaign has of big businesses with local ties in support of the measure. The list includes Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Marriot International and Time Warner Cable. Human Rights Campaign is the largest civil rights group in the U.S. advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.

• Hawaii Rep. Charles Djou says U.S. military personnel who cannot handle the proposed repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” should not be wearing the uniform. Djou, an Army reservist, says orders must be “followed to a tee.” You can view the video clip of Djou’s .

• Hawaii Sens. Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel Akaka have joined with Alaska’s two senators to urge the Postal Regulatory Commission to hold field hearings in both states on a Postal Service proposal to reduce mail delivery to five days a week. Hearings are already set for Las Vegas, Sacramento, Dallas, Memphis, Chicago, Rapid City and Buffalo, but the senators from the 49th and 50th states “is unique in Hawaii and Alaska, where residents depend on it for ‘basic and necessary items.'”
