Soon the nation will be celebrating Independence Day.

At Civil Beat, we thought it would be interesting to mark the day by asking people what independence means today, 234 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with its memorable words:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

How should we think of independence today? Energy self-reliance? Food sustainability? Native Hawaiian Sovereignty? Individual freedom?

The topic is wide open. We just ask that you limit your essay to 500 words. Please send your contributions by e-mail to news@civilbeat.com no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, June 28. Please include a horizontal photograph and short (no more than 100 words) bio of the author, with a picture. Also, please include a phone number where you can be reached. We’ll publish a collection on the July 4 weekend.
