The last time we heard from her about ending Furlough Fridays was a month ago when she asked teachers to volunteer their time the last three furlough days this school year.

Today, Gov. Linda Lingle is scheduled to hold a 4 p.m. news conference at the Capitol to discuss where negotiations stand to end the blight on Hawaii’s education reputation. If Lingle, the Hawaii State Board of Education and don’t reach an agreement, the state’s public school students could face another 17 days of lost instruction time next year.

Teachers have already agreed to give up planning time to restore six instruction days next year, and Lingle said last month she would be willing to release up to $57.2 million to restore the remaining 11. But she
has yet to sign that would allow her to release the $57.2 million from the state’s Hurricane Relief Fund.
