Two Hawaii state House committees have scheduled an informational briefing June 2 at the Capitol. The purpose: “to review concerns relating to the homeless arrivals to Hawaii which has caused substantial strain to the current services for isle homeless.”
Lawmakers also want to learn more about a Housing First Pilot Program approved by the Legislature last session, challenges in prosecuting public housing fraud, and barriers to providing housing to homeless people.
A recent spate of news reports, including from Civil Beat, has put homelessness in the public spotlight again.
Organizations invited to testify before the House Committee on Housing and Committee on Human Services include the Hawaii Public Housing Authority, the Waikiki Health Center, the Institute for Human Services, and social-services and faith-based support groups.
