Teachers Can’t Legally Work on Furlough Days, Union Says
The Hawaii State Teachers Association said it would be illegal for teachers to break their union contracts by working — even voluntarily — on Furlough Fridays.
The union was responding to Gov. Linda Lingle‘s on the three remaining Furlough Fridays for the 2009-2010 school year. They are scheduled for April 30, May 7 and May 14.
HSTA President 1 that under the teachers’ contracts, it is against the law for them to show up to work without pay.
Should union contracts dictate what teachers and principals decide to do on a volunteer basis for Hawaii’s students?
